Sixth Station: Jesus and Veronica
Simon of Cyrene was forced to help Jesus by carrying the cross part of the way. Not a gospel, but a touching old legend relates the help which was given to Jesus without force and out of pure sympathy.
A woman named Veronica offered Him a linen cloth with which to wipe the blood and sweat from his face. He took the cloth and, by impregnating His face upon it, made it a picture for meditation, a miracle-working image.
Medieval art often portrayed this image of the Lord impregnated on Veronica’s cloth that is either held by her or an angel. …
Veronica comforts Jesus and teaches us to comfort Christ whom we encounter in the form of the troubled and burdened.
